Layer Cake Cowl

Layers of color! This project is a fun way to be creative with yarn color. Also to use up some of those leftovers yarn bits that you cherish. Each section of color only uses 2 1/2 grams of yarn! Use a bunch of colors or just a few. The cowls shown here use 18 scrumptious colors and 1 main color all in a fingering weight kit. Layer them as a fade or in a contrast. The pattern contains two sizes, instructions on how to adjust the size and different color arrangements. The special stitch used in the pattern is super fun and there are detailed instructions and a video tutorial on how to work it.

Finished Dimensions (easily adjustable-see notes):

Small: 21”/ 53.5 cm circumference x 10”/ 25.5 cm wide. Large: 42”/ 106.5cm circumference x 10”/ 25.5 cm wide.

 

Yarn:

 Fingering, sport or dk weight in multiple colors. Cowl is arranged into layers separated by the MC. Each layer has 6 colors arranged like this: CC1, CC2, CC1 — CC3, CC4, CC3 — CC5, CC6, CC5

Size S has 3 layers. Size L has 6 layers.  We used 18 colors, but you could choose any color combination and arrangement you want (pick your favorite flavors!).

 

Yarn Used:

Cape May Fiber Layer Cake Mini Skein Set (fingering weight), which includes:

- 1 Mini Skein Sock (20g /92 yds) in Orange

- 18 Mico Mini Skeins (10g /46 yds each) dyed in a gradient from gold to burgundy, fuchsia to deep purple

Approximate yarn amounts:

Each color section uses 2.5g/12yds of yarn Small has 27 color sections. Large has 54 color sections.

Small (3 layers): MC = 3g/ 14 yds per layer. CC1, CC3 and CC5 = 5g / 23 yds each per layer.

CC2, CC4 and CC6 = 2.5g /12 yds each per layer.

Large (6 layers): MC= 3g/ 14 yds per layer. CC1-CC6: Same amts as small for 1st 3 layers and color amts switched for second 3 layers.
